Near the Merchandise Mart, Pick Your Base Before Your Room

Why choosing West Loop, Lincoln Park or McCormick Place matters more than the room near Chicago's Merchandise Mart, and how to find the base that fits.

There's nothing worse than paying for a hotel that turns every plan into a commute. Near the Merchandise Mart it's easy to do, because a map makes several very different neighbourhoods look like one. I spent fifteen years climbing cell towers and learned to judge any route by its slowest leg, so I judge a base the same way: pick the zone first, the room second.

Here's the duel I ran on paper: the West Loop against the North Side, with the same plan for both (the river, a show, a free morning). None of the five hotels below sits on the Mart's doorstep, and I'd rather tell you what each one costs you in minutes than pretend otherwise.

The two bases and the tiebreaker rules

The plan: a morning at the Merchandise Mart, the river from a boat, an evening show, and one free morning that isn't a museum. Two zones can carry it. General guides are great at listing sights but quiet on this, so here are my tiebreakers: minutes from the front door to an L line, what's still open after the show, what you do when it rains, and how cheaply you can leave at 6 am.

The Brown Line serves the Mart, and the Red Line runs all night, so I let those two lines decide who stays in the running.

That's my rule, and I own it.

The river and the Mart's own block

Whichever base you pick, the Mart looks best from the water. The Chicago Architecture Center's 90-minute docent-led cruise covers more than 50 buildings, the Merchandise Mart among them, and its 2026 season ends on 22 November. The dock is at the southeast corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, 112 E. Wacker Dr.: arrive 30 minutes early, because weekend and twilight departures often sell out. Wendella runs year-round if you miss the window, boarding at 400 N. Michigan Ave.

Stay close to the river and House of Blues Chicago, 329 N. Dearborn, has Better Than Ezra on 8 November and Michelle Branch on 10 November, both 17 and over. To compare more than my five picks, use the full Chicago hotel list.

Base one under real conditions: the West Loop

The West Loop is where my plan works best after dark. The United Center has the Blackhawks against the Avalanche on 2 November at 7:00 pm, Dave Matthews Band on 7 November at 7:30 pm and the Bulls against the 76ers on 8 November at 2:30 pm. Garcia's Chicago on Washington Blvd has Cut Copy on 10 November (18 and over), and Randolph Street's restaurant row adds Girl & The Goat, with Smyth and Oriole in the same district.

The catch is the river: every boat and every skyline stop is a train ride away.

Base two under real conditions: Lincoln Park

The North Side wins every morning. Lincoln Park Zoo is free 365 days a year, with gates open 8 am to 5 pm and animal buildings from 10 am to 4:30 pm. The Lincoln Park Conservatory takes timed entry Wednesday to Sunday, and ZooLights runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with advance tickets from $7 and $20 on the day. For rain, the Chicago History Museum charges $24 for non-Chicago adults in 2026, and The Second City is at 1616 N. Wells St. in Old Town. The Brown Line, which also serves the Mart, reaches Old Town at Sedgwick.

Wrigleyville nights, and what they cost you

Further north the nights get louder. Wrigley Field runs tours of about 90 minutes when there's no game, the Vic Theatre has Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox on 4 November, and Metro has Six60 on 13 November (18 and over). The Aragon Ballroom in Uptown has Trippie Redd on 5 November (17 and over) and Rawayana on 7 November (all ages). The Red Line runs all night, which is the whole argument for this zone: you can leave a late show without a taxi. The price is distance from the river and the Mart.

The November calendar that tilts the choice

Dates matter more than most guides admit. Christkindlmarket opens at Daley Plaza on 20 November and runs to 24 December. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is Saturday 21 November, with the parade at 5:30 pm and fireworks at 7:30 pm. The Thanksgiving Parade starts on State Street at 7:45 am on 26 November. All of it sits downtown, so each base needs a train or bus, and that favours whoever sleeps closest to a line you'd trust at midnight.

Every extra ZooLights night, on the other hand, is a point for Lincoln Park.

Where each one failed

Every base fails somewhere. The West Loop failed my river test: the Art Institute is 3.4 km from Hyatt House, a ride rather than a stroll, and the elevated State/Lake station is shut from 5 January 2026 until about 2029, so Loop trains bypass it and you route through Clark/Lake or Washington/Wabash. Lincoln Park failed on downtown time: 4.8 km to the Magnificent Mile is a daily tax, and Uptown venues like the Aragon add more.

Early in my tower years I booked a bed that was 'close' and lost two hours a day to a connection I hadn't counted. I haven't done that since, and you shouldn't either.

The third contender: McCormick Place

If your Mart visit is trade business, the South Loop deserves a look. Wintrust Arena has DePaul on 2 November and Cash Money & No Limit on 13 November, Arie Crown Theater has Jodeci on 7 November, and Soldier Field hosts the Bears against the Buccaneers on 8 November at 7:20 pm. The Museum Campus is close enough to plan a day around: the Field Museum starts at $30 for non-Chicago guests (2026), and the #146 bus links Michigan Avenue to the campus.

The costs, side by side

Room rates swing with every Bulls game, so price the legs between bases instead: L ride $2.50, bus $2.25, one-day pass $5, three-day pass $15 (CTA fares, October 2026). West Loop and Lincoln Park pay the same fares, so the real difference is time. Then add the extras that shape a day: the Art Institute at $32 for non-Illinois adults and the Field Museum from $30 (both 2026), ZooLights from $7 bought ahead (November 2026), and Majestic parking at $30 a day (October 2026). Large central hotels also carry a 1.5% district charge since 1 May 2026, which takes the downtown tax total to about 19%.

The winner, and when the loser wins instead

Winner: the West Loop for a Mart-centred plan of river, shows and dinners, because the United Center, Garcia's and the restaurant row all cluster there. The North Side wins when the free zoo morning, Wrigley Field and ZooLights are the point of the trip, and McCormick Place wins the week your meetings are at the convention centre.

Choose the base that fits and you stop commuting to your trip and start living in it: you're not just passing through a city, you're meeting its people on their own block. (Yes, we sell rooms too, see hotels and apartments in Chicago, but I'd rather you pick right than pick ours.) Prices and availability can change, so confirm when you book.

Pick the train line you'll trust at midnight, then book the room that sits on it.
