Skip the Airport Hotel and Stay Near Chester's Roodee

Why a walkable base beats an airport hotel for race days at Chester Racecourse, and how to choose between the city centre and the edge of town.

Nothing wastes a trip budget faster than a room booked for the wrong reason: a night by the runway because the flight was early, then a morning wondering how to reach a racecourse 40 km away. Pick your base from the plan, not from the airport. For a day at Chester Racecourse, that comes down to a duel between two bases: inside the walls on foot, or on the edge of town with a car.

I judge a base the way I used to judge a tower access road, by asking what happens when the plan goes wrong. Below you get the racing calendar, both bases, where each one fails, how to arrive by air and a verdict.

The two bases and the rule that settles it

Base one is the walking base: a hotel inside the walls, where the racecourse is a stroll and the cathedral, the Rows and Watergate Street are all on the same loop. Base two is the driving base: a country-house or spa hotel on the edge of Chester, with free parking and a motorway close by. General guides call both "near the racecourse", but the real question is narrower: what do you do at 09:00 on a race day, when Watergate Street, New Crane Street and Nuns Road are barriered off until 21:00?

My tiebreaker comes from years of working on sites with gated access roads: the base that still works when the plan breaks wins. When you search, use terms like: "Chester Racecourse hotels", "walk to racecourse", "free parking", "luggage storage".

What the Roodee asks of you, and when

Racing on the Roodee, the flat meadow below the city walls, has been recorded since 1540, and the season packs 15 fixtures between May and September. The anchor is the Boodles May Festival, Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 May 2027: Trials Day, Ladies Day, then Chester Cup Day, when hotels sell out and prices rise.

Chester Racecourse on the Roodee

Later come Roman Day on 29 May, Family Fun Day on 1 August, Simply Red on the Open Course on 7 August and the Cheshire Racing Festival on 10 and 11 September. Tickets use dynamic pricing, so earlier is cheaper, plus a £1.50 fee per ticket (October 2026 listing).

Base one: inside the walls, on foot

The walking base pays off because the sights cluster. From the racecourse it is about 9 minutes to Chester Castle, 11 to the Cross and the Rows, and 13 to the cathedral, while Stanley Palace and the Watergate Street restaurants sit about 4 to 5 minutes away. The walls above the Watergate overlook the course, so even a ticketless look is free.

For the evening, stay on foot: Upstairs at the Grill, Barlounge, Olive Tree Brasserie, Palm. Book any of them for race days.

Stay at The Commercial Bar & Hotel if the shortest walk matters most: its listing gives the racecourse as 5 minutes on foot, with the cathedral a few steps away, the Guildhall 2 minutes and the station 14 minutes. You gain a walk home after the last race. You trade away extras, since the description sticks to air-conditioned rooms with walk-in showers, a sun terrace and private check-in rather than a gym or pool. Google Travel ↗

Leonardo Hotel Chester is my pick for the best-equipped base in the walls: 8 minutes' walk to the racecourse, 500 metres to the cathedral, 16 minutes to the station. Guests praise the bed comfort and soundproofing, and downstairs you get a restaurant, bar, coffee shop, fitness centre, room service and luggage storage, handy if you check out before a flight. Against the Commercial you give up a few minutes of walking and gain a front desk that never closes. If you are comparing hotels near the Roodee, start here.

Where the walking base failed

Every base has a weak point, and this one has three. First, central stock is shrinking: the five-star Chester Grosvenor beside the Eastgate was announced to close on 30 September 2026 for RAAC repairs, so remaining central rooms go first in festival weeks. Second, the Rows are reached by stairs, which is awkward with luggage. Third, race-day nights are loud.

I learned that third lesson on a tower job, when I booked a motel for the short commute and lost sleep to the bar next door. Also sort your group before you arrive: e-tickets go to the lead booker and the racecourse is cashless apart from bookmakers.

Choose The Saddle Inn for atmosphere: a historic building a short walk from the racecourse and the cathedral, with garden and city views, soundproofed rooms, family rooms and pet-friendly options. Breakfast is à la carte with vegan choices, and there is a sun terrace and bicycle parking. The trade is that evening entertainment such as karaoke is part of the offer, so I would book elsewhere before an early Friday card. Tripadvisor ↗

Base two: the edge of town, with a car

The driving base earns its keep when the plan reaches beyond the Roodee. Chester Zoo is about 3 km north of the centre with free parking; in autumn 2026 an online adult ticket was £38, and from 2 November 2026 it closes at 16:00, so the day is shorter than you think. Lanterns & Light runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet and the M56 sit on this side too. When you shop, filter for: "free parking", "indoor swimming pool", "spa", "family rooms".

For the shortest drive, Brook Mollington Banastre Hotel & Spa is the best base on the edge: a 3-star country house dating from 1853, about 3 km from the city centre, with the racecourse and Cheshire Oaks 5 minutes' drive away and Chester Zoo 10. It has an indoor pool, fitness centre, free parking and a Garden Room Restaurant. You trade the walk home, because race-day closures become your problem. See this country house ->

Pick Doubletree By Hilton Chester for a spa weekend: an 18th-century manor in 12 acres, 2 minutes from the M53, with the zoo 5 minutes' drive away and the racecourse 10. A spa package gets you an aroma steam room, glass-fronted sauna, hot tub, two pools and a gym, and the rooms are air-conditioned. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is about 37 km away. You trade a 10-minute drive each way for that grounds-and-spa package. Booking.com ↗

Arriving by air without a terminal hotel

Liverpool John Lennon is 40 km from the centre: take Arriva bus 86A to Liverpool South Parkway, then a Merseyrail or Transport for Wales train to Chester, or a taxi of about 40 minutes. Manchester Airport is 56 km away: trains average 1 hour 30 minutes, a few direct ones take just over an hour, and by car it is about 35 minutes via the M56.

Here is where this fails: on Sunday 1 November 2026, buses replace trains between Chester and Crewe, and Liverpool Lime Street trains are replaced by buses from South Parkway. Overnight works follow on 2 to 6 November. The backup is the racecourse itself: 20 minutes' walk from Chester station, or about 6 minutes by taxi. The Visitor Information Centre in the Town Hall is on 01244 405340.

The verdict: which base wins, and when the loser does

The walking base wins for race days. When roads close and trains are packed, the plan that needs no car cannot be broken by either. The edge-of-town base wins when your plan is the zoo, the spa or the outlet, and it wins on non-race days, when closures are not an issue.

If you want to compare both zones, our listings cover them (yes, we do this too!): Chester hotels and all accommodation in Chester.

Book the walking base before the May Festival sells out, and remember prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking. The Roodee has been drawing crowds since 1540. You are not just going to the races, you are meeting your people.
