Why Your Airport Hotel Should Sit Closer to the City

Opinion: near Overschie, the airport-side base only wins on early flights. Two bases tested for one trip plan, and five hotels worth searching for.

There's nothing worse than paying for an airport hotel and finding out it only buys you a car park and a 6 a.m. alarm. I've made that mistake, and it cost me an evening I'd already paid for. Near Museum Oud Overschie de Hoop you can do better, because two bases compete for the same plan of landing, seeing Rotterdam and flying out. Below I run both back to back, show where each one fails, and name a winner. Pick the base that fits your plan, not the one with 'airport' in its name.

Two bases, one trip plan, and the tiebreak rules

Overschie is an old village on the Schie in Rotterdam's north-west corner, right beside Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM). That gives you two sensible bases: base one, the airport edge around Overschie and Blijdorp, and base two, the city-centre side, 4 to 6 km from the runway.

My tiebreak rules, in order: minutes to the airport, minutes to something worth doing after you land, and what happens when the bus doesn't turn up. When you browse hotels in Rotterdam, search these: 'airport hotel Rotterdam', 'hotel near Diergaarde Blijdorp', 'hotel near Rotterdam Centraal'.

Base one under real conditions: the airport edge

RTM is a small regional airport with direct flights to more than 50 European destinations, flown by carriers such as Transavia, British Airways, TUI and Corendon. Bus 33 runs to Rotterdam Centraal, buses 33 and 533 reach Meijersplein for metro line E, and a taxi into the centre takes about 15 minutes.

You can tap a contactless card on the bus (OVpay). Backup plan if a bus fails you: take a taxi, or head for the Rotterdam Tourist Information desk in the Centraal main hall.

The airport is a 5-minute drive away and the A20/A13 motorway only 200 metres, so this is where I'd park the car and relax before a flight. It sits in Roelof Langerak Park right next to Blijdorp Zoo, 2.5 km from the city centre and Centraal. Rooms have air conditioning and most a walk-in shower; the restaurant opens seven days a week, and the breakfast buffet costs extra. Couples rate the location 8.1 out of 10, and private parking is on site. Check airport hotels in Blijdorp for availability.

Base one's day out: the zoo, the park and the Van Nelle

Diergaarde Blijdorp opens every day of the year. In winter time (low season runs 2 November to 31 March) it closes at 16:00 on weekdays and 17:00 at weekends. As I checked in November 2026, day tickets for ages 13+ ran €27.50 to €31.50, by date category.

Next door, Vroesenpark has the Vroesenpaviljoen, open daily 10:00 to 18:00. The UNESCO-listed Van Nelle Factory is the one real detour: its interior opens only on weekend guided tours, and bus 38 from Centraal takes about 10 minutes.

Base two under real conditions: the Centraal side

Here you trade the runway for the rail network. From Centraal, Intercity Direct reaches Schiphol in 25 minutes and Amsterdam in 40, and Antwerp is 32 minutes away by Eurostar. The city has about 600 km of cycle paths, which matters when your hotel rents bikes.

All three hotels below are within a 20-minute walk of Blijdorp Zoo and 4 to 6 km from the airport. My honest ranking for a first night: Not Hotel for walking, Supernova for the Euromast side, Teleport for parking.

It is in the city centre, a 13-minute walk from Diergaarde Blijdorp and 1.4 km from the World Trade Centre, with the airport 6 km away. Rooms are air-conditioned with free toiletries, and there's a sun terrace, a lounge, a minimarket and a coffee shop. Guests single out the public transport links and attentive staff. For what it's worth, it's my winner. See rates ->

It opened in 2018, with private parking, a restaurant, a shared lounge and a 24-hour front desk. Diergaarde Blijdorp is a 20-minute walk and the airport 4 km away, the closest of the three city-side options. Rooms have a desk, seating area, flat-screen TV and a tea and coffee maker, and a buffet breakfast is served. official site ↗

What base two does after dark

This is where base two earns its keep. De Doelen, on the Schouwburgplein, has a November 2026 run of Demon Slayer in Concert (6 November), the Naruto Shippuden Symphonic Experience (12 November), Yotam Ottolenghi (13 November) and The Witcher in Concert (28 November).

The Euromast reopened on 18 June 2026 after a half-year renovation, and Station Bergweg's food hall under the Hofbogen opens Wednesday to Sunday. From base one, every one of those is a taxi or metro decision.

Where each one failed

Base one failed after dark. The zoo shuts at 16:00 on winter weekdays, and the centre is 2.5 km away, so your evening becomes a hotel dinner or a ride. Base two failed on the morning flight: 4 to 6 km becomes a bus-or-taxi gamble, even if a taxi takes about 15 minutes.

In my tower-climbing years I once booked a motel sold as 'ten minutes from site' and drove forty, so I now test every promise. Check the first bus in the RET app the night before, and keep a taxi as your fallback.

The costs, side by side

I can't give you nightly rates, and they move by season anyway, so compare what's visible: tourist tax is 6.5% of the room charge excluding VAT in 2026. Van der Valk's breakfast costs extra; Teleport includes a buffet and private parking; Supernova rents bikes.

The hidden bill is time: a 15-minute taxi each way against a 5-minute drive. In your searches, filter for: 'breakfast included', 'private parking', '24-hour front desk'. Those three filters cut more wasted money than any price slider.

The winner, and when the loser wins instead

Base two wins for most plans, because a trip is mostly the hours between landing and flying. The airport edge wins only when your flight leaves before the buses wake up, or you're driving and the zoo is the whole plan.

There's a dark horse to the west too: Schiedam, 5 km from Rotterdam and 6 km from the airport, with the world's tallest traditional windmills in town and a station with trains and metro.

This 4-star villa in Schiedam has a garden and a shared lounge, with some rooms looking over the harbour. Rooms have a desk, a kettle and a coffee machine with a combi-microwave, and breakfast is either fresh foods from your fridge or the cosy breakfast area. Parking is private but paid, and cycling is the local pastime. Booking.com ↗

Pick the base, then book

When the base matches the plan, you stop feeling like a visitor killing time between flights and start feeling like someone who lives on the route. That, not a shorter taxi ride, is the real payoff. Use the Rotterdam hotels listing (yes, a light plug) to compare the same filters across all five.

Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking. Which base is yours: the 5-minute drive, or the evening at De Doelen?
